The Board of Trustees is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Michelle P. Parker as the third Head of School for Seneca Academy, effective July 1 st 2016. The Board’s unanimous vote caps a 9-month long search process which began after Dr. Brooke Carroll announced her intention to retire from Seneca Academy after 9 years of service with distinction as the 2nd Head of School in the schools’ 33-year history.
Dr. Parker comes to Seneca from The Sidwell Friends School, where she currently serves as the All School Counseling Coordinator and Middle School Counselor. A licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, she is also the current Vice Chair of Board of Directors for the Argentine School of Washington in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Parker lives in Washington, DC with her husband. They are enjoying their new status as “empty-nesters” now that the youngest of their three children is in college. In addition to her passion for teaching and learning, Dr. Parker also enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, going to the movies, and photography.
Dr. Parker received her Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the George Washington University in Washington, DC. and a B.A. in Psychobiology from Swarthmore College in PA.
Her educational background in clinical psychology has given her enormous insight into building strong communities, as well as best practices in education. As a bilingual educator, psychologist, board member, consultant and researcher, Dr. Parker has held several leadership positions in the educational arena at George Washington University in Washington, DC., Argosy University in Virginia, St. Albans School for Boys, and The Sidwell Friends School both located in Washington, DC.
She has held positions at the American Psychological Association as the Co-Director and Clinical Supervisor of Parent Coordination Project in Washington, DC. and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Reginald Lourie Center for Children in Rockville, MD. Dr. Parker has been instrumental in developing programs and curriculum, workshops, therapeutic tutoring for students with learning issues, as well as providing educational instruction and guidance for students from elementary through graduate level students.
Dr. Parker has utilized her management, strategic planning and fundraising skills to further best practices in education at each of the schools she has served. She has spearheaded initiatives by integrating interdisciplinary learning in to the curriculum increasing global learning opportunities and including social-emotional wellness and service learning as a “way of life” that strongly complement the mission and vision of Seneca Academy. During the interview process, Dr. Parker’s ability to build teams and think strategically were apparent to the Board of Trustees. Above all, however, her genuine passion and respect for our school’s mission make her an outstandingly qualified candidate.
